Process Improvement Project Manager

The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for the health professions. Protection of the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment of health professionals is the mission of the NBME, along with a major commitment to research and development in evaluation and measurement.

The NBME was founded in 1915 because of the need for a voluntary, nationwide examination that medical licensing authorities could accept as the standard by which to judge candidates for medical licensure. Since that time, it has continued without interruption to provide high-quality examinations for this purpose and has become a model and a resource of international stature in testing methodologies and evaluation in medicine.

Although the NBME's mission is centered on assessment of physicians, it encompasses the spectrum of health professionals along the continuum of education, training, and practice and includes research in evaluation as well as development of assessment instruments.

The NBME is located in Philadelphia's University City neighborhood, home to some of the country's most esteemed universities, nonprofit research institutes, and research and teaching hospitals.

The NBME Renewal is a strategic framework to accomplish our mission and vision in a focused and sustainable fashion.  The NBME Renewal is the most significant undertaking among the Board's recent initiatives. 

The Process Improvement Project Manager (Process Expert) plays a key role within the Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness group, driving Renewal at the NBME.  The Process Improvement Project Engineer leads continuous improvement projects and strategic initiatives at the NBME to achieve sustainable results. This person, along with the project owners, is accountable for achieving the pre-defined results from the projects within the agreed timeline.

The Process Expert brings  experience in and passion for project management, business operations, process management and continuous improvement, and strategic planning.



  • Support the sponsor and owner to develop the project charters including defining the objectives, metrics, scope, team members, timeline and commitment required. Coach and mentor the team on the project approach and process improvement methodology. 
  • Facilitate the redesign of the process or all necessary solutions to achieve the target results. Manage all the documentation and deliverables throughout the projects. Plan, prepare for and facilitate all project meetings efficiently and effectively.
  • Manage project issues and risks including proper escalation to project sponsors. Keep all team members informed and engaged throughout the projects. 
  • Support sponsors/owners on all communication regarding the projects. Compiles, analyzes, coordinates and presents data for use by sponsors.
  • Lead team members to complete assigned tasks within specified timelines and ensure all team members feel engaged, productive and effective.
  • Identify, prioritize and recommend process improvement projects.
  • Ensure conformance to NBME Governance Guidelines.


  • Bachelor's degree required, graduate degree desired, MBA strongly desired
  • 5 or more years of business experience, with some experience in project management and process redesign
  • Exceptional meeting facilitation skills.  Able to motivate and methodically lead a team to solve problem and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Strong business acumen.  Ability to learn and adapt to change quickly.
  • Familiarity with process improvement methods, lean techniques and tools (e.g. fast cycle improvement methodology)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using quantitative tools for idea generation and problem solving. 
  • Experience using process mapping methods. (e.g. critical path analysis, work-flow, etc.) desired.
  • Exceptional process and data-driven analytic skills utilizing tools.
  • Highly analytical and experienced in data analyses (knowledge in statistical analysis and database tools is a plus)
  • Highly motivated, internal driven, and results oriented
  • Excellent Interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
